Family survives Missouri "tsunami"

Lisa Toops heard it first and shouted to her husband. She thought it was a tornado. The thunder reminded Jerry Toops of low-flying fighter jets. The roar was from the billion-gallon deluge blasting down Proffit Mountain from AmerenUE's hilltop reservoir.

The tidal wave obliterated their home before dawn Dec. 14, washing the Toopses and their three young children into the darkness and cold mud. Yet they all survived.

"I compare it to an eggshell, the way the house broke apart."
