Iran dominating southern Iraq with militias

"Southern Iraq, long touted as a peaceful region that's likely to be among the first areas returned to Iraqi control, is now dominated by Shiite Muslim warlords and militiamen who are laying the groundwork for an Islamic fundamentalist government, say senior British and Iraqi officials in the area.

The militias appear to be supported by Iranian intelligence or military units that are shipping weapons to the militias in Iraq and providing training for them in Iran."

Matt Blunt discusses Charlie Shields (R-St Joseph)

Q. There’s been a lot of tension between the House and the Senate in this past session. How would you rate your relationship with leaders in the Senate and in the House?

A. I think my relationship with leaders in the Senate and the House is excellent. (Sen.) Charlie Shields, I can’t say enough good things about that guy. He is a terrific leader of the Missouri Senate, and the productive nature of this Senate defies anybody’s expectations. Certainly as I talk to governors in other states and think about the past in Missouri, we’re very fortunate that we have a leader of Charlie Shields’ ability and those sorts of diplomatic skills to lead the Senate, and he’s doing a tremendous job.

"Development" coming to Zamyn Uud, Mongolia

"Its proximity to a desert is about the only thing the Mongolian border town Zamyn Uud has in common with the gambling mecca of Las Vegas.

Last week, the government of Mongolia signed a contract that will put a little-known U.S. real estate company, Winwheel Bullion LLC, in charge of building a casino complex, with hotels, a convention center, shopping malls, banks and financial institutions -- and a modern airport to bring visitors the vast distances needed to reach Zamyn Uud."

Where in the World is......Louisiana???

"Despite wall-to-wall coverage of the damage from Hurricane Katrina, nearly one-third of young Americans recently polled couldn't locate Louisiana on a map and nearly half were unable to identify Mississippi.

Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 fared even worse with foreign locations: six in 10 couldn't find Iraq, according to a Roper poll conducted for National Geographic.

47 percent could not find the Indian subcontinent on a map of Asia."

Origin of "Gringo"....It's greek to me

"Word History: In Latin America the word gringo is an offensive term for a foreigner, particularly an American or English person. But the word existed in Spanish before this particular sense came into being. In fact, gringo may be an alteration of the word griego, the Spanish development of Latin Graecus, "Greek."

Griego first meant "Greek, Grecian," as an adjective and "Greek, Greek language," as a noun. The saying "It's Greek to me" exists in Spanish, as it does in English, and helps us understand why griego came to mean "unintelligible language" and perhaps, by further extension of this idea, "stranger, that is, one who speaks a foreign language."

The altered form gringo lost touch with Greek but has the senses "unintelligible language," "foreigner, especially an English person," and in Latin America, "North American or Britisher." Its first recorded English use (1849) is in John Woodhouse Audubon's Western Journal: "We were hooted and shouted at as we passed through, and called 'Gringoes."

Iran has sent troops into Iraq

"Iran sent troops across the Iraqi border three miles towards Haj Oman nine days ago, where Kurdish opposition bases itself for its efforts to unseat the mullahcracy in Teheran:
Teheran has attacked an anti-Iranian Kurdish group based in Iraq, it emerged yesterday, raising fears that instability there could spill over into the rest of the region.
Iraq's defence ministry said more than 180 artillery shells were fired and Iranian troops crossed three miles into Iraqi territory before withdrawing."

Brad Smith drafted by Jets

"Missouri’s Brad Smith is willing to budge a little. The New York Jets drafted him as a wide receiver Sunday in the fourth round of the NFL draft, but Smith still considers himself a quarterback. So after speaking with Jets officials, Smith reached a compromise. Just call him a Playmaker.

“I’m coming in as a team player and athlete,” Smith said from Youngstown, Ohio, where he watched the draft, went to church and began preparing for life as a … wide receiver/quarterback/running back/special-teams player."
